Here is my large and very powerful anchor winch it is powered by a twin cylinder Lister diesel which is very easy to start.I found it on the "Boats and Outboards " site it came with two huge anchors and a couple of tons of chain.

One thing I keep agonising over is whether I should put some portholes in the hull, for me this is a difficult decision due to originality.I have seen some truly dreadful trawler conversions some with large equally spaced portholes with polished brass rings .If I put them in to give me something to look out of I need them to look almost if they should be there in a discreet sort of way. What does anyone think?

Greig says, "good score!"

He's been wanting to find a Lister for us as the don't require electricty to start.

Hi Andrew

For what it's worth, I have a similar problem but am currently opting not to put in portholes.

My thinking being the integrity of the hull (8-10 mm) is more important than the view, simply because I don't want to prejudice LJ's ability to operate in extreme conditions.

You never know!

Hi Tim
Thanks for your comments ,I agree integrity is the most important issue although I would have thought that with a steel hull this would be less of an issue, if you were to use the welded in variety surely the integrity would be maintained .Also as fishing vessels tend to be overbuilt due to there working conditions would the addition of portholes cause any more problems than any other seagoing vessel that has a whole string of them.It would be interesting to Know what a marine surveyor or structural engineer would say.

Something less to worry about and not to clutter up your off to sea check list! its my experience that they get left open and then guests have to sleep in a wet bed. Its easy enough to say that it won`t ever happen but it does, for what ever reason. :o(( also they are another area for the dreaded rot to start too.Yea I know that wont happen if they are fitted properly, but it does! sorry to sound like the voice of doom
